Profile

I treat children and adults with strabismus, and I write about how it is examined, measured, and operated on. My clinical work sits alongside three long-running strands: reference books for surgeons and residents, a strabismus instrument of my own design, and diagnostic tests developed to answer questions the standard examination leaves open.

Everything published here is written for practising clinicians: ophthalmologists, strabismus fellows, residents, and orthoptists.

    The Gaze Blinking Test

    A bedside test for identifying which extraocular muscles have been operated on before — answered before reoperation rather than discovered during it, in patients whose surgical records are missing or incomplete.

  • SVFT

    The Smartphone Video Flashing Test

    A red reflex screening method that a nurse with no ophthalmic training can perform using a smartphone, following a standardised acquisition protocol. Intended for newborn screening where an ophthalmologist is not on site.
